Swim & Dive Wins 6th Straight WCAC Title, WMPSSDLs Up Next
Swim and Dive won its 6th consecutive WCAC title on Saturday, outpacing 2nd place DeMatha by 77 points (455.5 to 378.5). Earlier in the week, Divers Timmy Walsh ‘27, Chase Tovornik ‘24, and Jack Clark ‘27 gave Gonzaga a 19 point lead over DeMatha going into the swimming on Saturday.
The Eagles broke open the meet during the middle five events. In the 50 freestyle, Malcolm McKenzie ‘24, seeded 3rd, won the race, and senior Hank Holden jumped from the 8th seed to finish 3rd overall. In the next event, the 100 fly, Malcolm took the gold medal again, with Finn Bacon ‘24 finishing 3rd. Palmer Bice ‘25 made it three wins in a row for Gonzaga, capturing the 100 free title despite being seeded 4th in the event. The distance guys showed up next, with Anderson Bishop ‘25 and Kirk Morgan ‘27 finishing 4th and 5th. The 200 freestyle relay. Gonzaga’s team of McKenzie, Morgan, Holden, and Bice edged out DeMatha in a very exciting race to win and solidify our position for the team title going into the final races.
Gonzaga closed out the meet for good with a dominant performance in the 100 backstroke. Bacon finished in 1st to remain undefeated in the event on the year. Oliver Gooch ‘26 and George Thiede ‘27 secured 7th and 8th place to give Gonzaga three swimmers in the Top 8.
Swim and Dive will compete in the Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim and Dive League (WMPSSDL) Championships on Saturday, February 3 at The University of Maryland. Prelims begin at 7:30am, with diving finals at 12pm and swimming finals commencing at 5:30pm. Click
