Student Technology
At Gonzaga, all students are required to bring a web-enabled device to school every day. The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program is an opportunity for students to help shape their educational experiences.
When selecting a device for the upcoming year, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
- Preferred: MacBooks or Windows Laptops/Tablets
- Acceptable: Chromebooks
- Compatible with most school systems
- Limited in scope for some advanced courses in Computer Science and Fine Arts
- Not Allowed: Any device running iOS (iPads), Android, or Amazon’s Fire OS, and secondary devices such as smartphones, eReaders, portable video game systems, or media players are not included in Gonzaga’s BYOD program and will not be acceptable as primary devices.
The following requirements represent a minimum standard. Each student must bring a device that:

Runs one of the following operating systems:
- MacOS 15 (Sequoia OS or better), Windows (Windows 11), ChromeOS (130 or better)
- These are the operating systems that correspond with the acceptable devices above.
- MacOS 15 (Sequoia OS or better), Windows (Windows 11), ChromeOS (130 or better)
- Has a minimum 4 GB RAM (but we do recommend 8 GB RAM if possible)
- Has a minimum battery life of six hours
- Has a minimum screen size of 10” (diagonal)
- Has a physical keyboard
- Connects to wireless networks (WiFi). Verify with a salesperson that the device supports Wi-Fi 4 or better
- Records both audio and video
At Gonzaga, we use Google Workspace for Education and a learning management system called Canvas. Since both of these platforms can be accessed via an internet browser, there are no specific software requirements for devices.
Every student should have broadband Internet access outside of school, either through WiFi or through a physical connection, to complete homework assignments. This access can be at home, at a relative’s house, or at a public location such as a library or coffee shop. Gonzaga provides access to student workstations in the Library and the Innovation Commons from 7:30 am until 3:45 pm on school days; WiFi is available constantly at the school.
Calculator Policy
For students taking Algebra II or higher levels of Math, a graphing calculator is required. The HP Prime calculator is recommended for use and teachers will be able to provide instruction on its use. TIs and other calculators are permitted, although students may have to rely on the operating manual depending on the model they have. Students in Algebra I and Geometry are also strongly recommended to use a graphing calculator as teachers will be using them during certain lessons.
Summer Learning Program
If you plan to attend the Summer Learning Programs, please make sure to have your son's device by then. This will help your son's transition to the BYOD learning environment at Gonzaga.

Each student has a protective case or padded bag for his device (Take time to pick a good case, focusing on corner protection).
