In Memoriam: Robert Francis Murray ‘53
The Gonzaga community mourns the passing of Robert “Bob” Francis Murray ’53, a historian, artist, and devoted alumnus who spent decades documenting and beautifying our campus here on Eye Street.
A member of the Gonzaga Class of 1953, Bob’s connection to Jesuit education was lifelong. He continued his studies at Georgetown University, earning a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in 1976 and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 1991.
In 1995, Gonzaga College High School conferred upon Bob a Doctorate of Humane Letters (LHD). This degree recognized his extraordinary dedication to Gonzaga Alumni programs and his generosity in creating and donating several pieces of art to Gonzaga.
Perhaps his most enduring Gonzaga legacy is his work on the restoration of St. Aloysius Church. From 1991 to 1994, Bob served as a key leader in the planning and renovation of the historic church. His deep knowledge of the structure’s history later culminated in a book, Swampoodle Lily. He also wrote an earlier work called Gonzaga Memories 1917-1990.
Just last year, Bob was involved in restoring and refreshing two murals in the back of St. Al’s; you can read more about that project
here.
Beyond Eye Street, Bob was a prominent figure in the regional arts world. As the Founder and Director of the von Brahler Ltd. Gallery (1983–2011) and the Founder of the Association of Alexandria Art Galleries, he spent decades fostering the work of artists and bringing cultural enrichment to the greater Washington area.
Bob Murray did more than just remember Gonzaga’s history; he helped build the environment where that history is still lived today. The Gonzaga community's prayers are with Bob’s family and all of his dear friends.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 11 AM in Saint Aloysius Church. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
