Football Starts Season with Back-to-Back Wins
Gonzaga Varsity Football kicked off its season with back-to-back victories this week, showcasing clutch playmaking and dominant team defense.
On Friday, August 28, the Eagles opened their season at Calvert Hall in Towson. Gonzaga scored first on a 40-yard touchdown from quarterback Jason Lindsay '27 to wide receiver Lincoln Shelton '27, however the Cardinals followed with 21 unanswered points, taking a 21-6 lead into halftime.
Gonzaga dominated the third quarter on both sides of the ball, cutting the deficit to 21-12 after Asheton Burton '27 capped an efficient drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. Early in the fourth quarter, Burton struck again from seven yards out to pull the Eagles within two (21-19) with 10 minutes remaining.
Still trailing by two points, the Eagles got the ball back with four minutes left in the game on their own 30 yard line. Lindsay found Shelton on a 33-yard completion to get the offense within striking distance. On third down and long, Lindsay connected with tight-end Tyler Freeman '28 to give kicker Quinn Maguire '27 a chance to give the Eagles the lead. The team was set to have their home opener against Coolidge today, September 4, but due to the pending completion of the renovation to Buchanan Field at Reyda Stadium, the Eagles played at Coolidge last night instead, where they came away with a commanding 33-0 victory.
Burton scored four touchdowns on the ground and quarterback Nick Ferrante '28 connected with wide receiver Dean Sheldon '27 to complete the scoring. The Eagles defense earned the shutout by dominating from start to finish with key contributions from defensive lineman Tyler Frederick '27 and defensive back Jackson Waddy '27.
