Charter Day Spotlights Gonzaga’s Finest

On Friday, May 2, the Gonzaga community convened in St. Al’s Church for the annual Charter Day assembly, a tradition that commemorates school history and recognizes the many notable achievements of students, faculty and staff.

Dozens of students were honored for accomplishments in academics, arts, service, athletics and more, including The Barnes Award, which is presented to students distinguished for honor, humility, reliability and deportment. Faculty and staff celebrating milestone anniversaries were cheered enthusiastically for their devotion to the school.

The President’s Eagle Award was presented by Fr. Lingan to two outstanding staff members for their devotion and service to Gonzaga. Fr. Lingan praised Revenue Streams Manager Mrs. Lashieta Rogers (P’22,’25), as "a tremendous Gonzaga colleague and simply an extraordinary human being with a great soul... an unsung hero who is always family focused when it comes to any Gonzaga family." Head Basketball Coach Steve Turner (P’13,’22) was cited by Fr. Lingan for not only his coaching success, but for serving as a "thread in the fabric of Gonzaga for more than 25 years," and for his longtime devotion to the Vinco program and support of its alumni.

Determined by vote of the faculty, the Herlihy Award recognizes a faculty or staff member who embodies the qualities of excellence as a Jesuit educator, as well as loyalty, devotion, and a spirit of service. This year, Modern Language teacher Mrs. Barbara Reed received this honor.

Eighteen members of the faculty and staff were also recognized for milestone anniversaries of service to Gonzaga, beginning with five years, and culminating in 30 years for Herlihy Award winner Mrs. Barbara Reed.

The festivities were made all the more significant by the musical talents of the Chamber Choir and Symphonic Band. We hope you enjoy this video recap and photo album from this festive and wonderful day. Congratulations to this year’s honorees!
