2023 Ignatian Heritage Day Is a Celebration of Service

To celebrate Ignatian Heritage Day this year, Gonzaga hosted a school-wide Day of Service on Monday, April 24th. The theme of the day was “Prophets of a Future Not Our Own"-- which was taken from the Fr. Ken Unetener prayer, attributed to Saint Oscar Romero. You can read the full prayer here

The day began with a morning assembly, in which Gonzaga alumnus and Trustee Marcus Washington '98, who serves as the head of the Washington Jesuit Academy, offered a keynote address. Several students also read poems and reflections.

After the assembly, the freshmen, sophomore, and junior classes travelled to 18 different sites around the city to complete service projects. Meanwhile, seniors stayed on campus to participate in an advocacy day, where they attended sessions about housing issues in the District of Columbia.

The experience culminated back on Eye Street, where students were asked to write a reflection about how their service or advocacy work applied to the day's theme. Each student’s reflection is now posted in Dooley Hall as a reminder of the actions they hope to carry forward.
