Freshman Orientation: Welcome Class of 2024!

Over the course of three weeks in July, Gonzaga was pleased to be able to host in-person, physically-distanced orientation sessions for members of the Class of 2024. Each incoming freshman was assigned to a specific three-day period; students came to campus in groups of around 40, and were then divided into cohorts of six or seven students. Throughout the extended orientation format, students had a chance to get to know some of their classmates, take tours of campus, meet school leaders, and become more familiar with the basics of distance learning.

In addition, one parent or guardian of each student was invited to a socially distanced meet and greet in St. Aloysius Church with Gonzaga’s President, Father Stephen Planning, S.J. and Headmaster, Mr. Thomas Every.

"Every single member of the incoming freshman class was able to attend a session," says Scott Waller, Gonzaga's Director of Summer Learning. "And despite the many requirements and restrictions, it was wonderful to have students back on campus for the first time since early March."

The orientations also gave Gonzaga a chance to test several new protocols and procedures that will be in place come fall, including daily online health screening forms and student check-in stations.

"We were so excited to begin the process of bringing students back to campus these past three weeks in a safe and secure manner," says Headmaster Tom Every. "It was essential that we found a way to welcome our newest Eagles and provide them the skills and technologies they'll need to navigate school in the fall. The fact that it went so smoothly gives us great confidence in our plan for the academic year."
